Reynolds Ministries: Celebrating the Past
and Looking to the Future

Wanda Carpenter has been invaluable to the United Methodist Foundation of Western North Carolina during her 5 year tenure. After serving as the Executive Assistant to the President, in 2015 she transitioned into the role of Associate Director of Reynolds Ministries. In this position, Wanda used her experience as a lay leader in the church to not only facilitate the Reynolds ministries, she was very dedicated to embodying and executing the vision of Royce and Jane Reynolds.

Wanda’s last day is October 31, 2017, and while Wanda is sad to leave the Foundation, she and her husband James are excited to be moving closer to family. She said that her precious twin granddaughters, Amelia and Amaya, are especially pulling hard on her heartstrings.

Moving forward, the Foundation is pleased to announce that an exceptional candidate for this position was found within our own office. Effective November 1, 2017, Caroline Cox will transition into the position of Associate Director of Reynolds Ministries.

The Foundation President, Reverend David Snipes, said, “Although we are sad to see Wanda leave, we are happy to celebrate this milestone in her life. We are equally excited to see Caroline move into this key position of leadership within Reynolds Ministries that will enable us to continue to fulfill our mission of building the Church for generations to come.”

To learn more about Reynolds Ministries and other offerings of the Foundation, please visit our website at www.umfwnc.org.

Great Ministry in the Second Half of Life
Lake Junaluska, NC
October 30-November 3, 2017
A 5-day workshop

By the time people reach mid-career, they’ve learned the basics of their work.  The challenge of being new to ministry is gone and one’s attention turns to meaning and balance.  Sometimes mid-career ministry leaders find themselves asking, “Is this all there is?” or “Can I keep up this pace for the next decade?” or “Is God wanting me to try something new?”  Maybe you’ve been wondering how you can blossom and flourish in the second-half of your life.  Or maybe you’ve been wondering how you can put aside the past disappointments so you can prosper in passion once again.

Great Ministry in the Second-Half of Life is designed for ministry leaders over the age of 50 with a minimum of 10 years of service to the church.  In a beautiful retreat setting, we will examine research about mid-career, reflect on our own lives and passions, and talk with God and each other about how to find meaning, balance, joy and success at mid-career and beyond. More information is available at this link:

UMC SEXUAL HARASSMENT SURVEY

From the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women:

The survey will take between 5 and 20 minutes depending on your experience with sexual harassment in the Church.  Since this survey is about sensitive information, it is totally voluntary and you are invited to skip over any questions that are uncomfortable.  However, the more complete your survey, the more we can understand from the data.

We are relying on you to share this with anyone you know who attends or is employed by The United Methodist Church.  It is important for this survey to be distributed as widely as possible and completed by a broad sample of clergy and laity.  Here is the link to the survey: UMC Sexual Harassment Survey The deadline for submitting surveys is October 3.

If you have any concerns about sexual misconduct in your ministry setting, or believe that you may be a victim of sexual harassment, please contact Becky Williams at the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women, 312-346-4900.  If you have a question about the survey, please contact Gail Murphy-Geiss, Ph.D. at 719-389-6868.

LAITY SUNDAY IS OCTOBER 15

Laity Sunday in the United Methodist Church is on October 15, 2017 and the Board of Laity of the WNCC invites all congregations to celebrate the ministry of the laity on this Sunday.

Methodism has long celebrated and recognized the ministry of the laity.  In the early days of American Methodism, the laity served and maintained congregations between visits of the circuit riders.  Today, lay people are at the front line of daily ministry in our congregations and in our communities. Pastores Caminantes Program

The Hispanic House of Studies at Duke Divinity School is recruiting a sixth cohort of pastors for its  Pastores Caminantes program.  All pastors (Latino and non-Latino) who are passionate about ministering for and with the Hispanic/Latino community in North Carolina and elsewhere in the U.S. are encouraged to apply.

During the program, a group of up to 12 sojourners meets periodically for spiritual formation from a Hispanic/Latino Methodist perspective, reflects on ways to be more culturally humble, and participates in language immersions. Thanks to a generous grant by The Duke Endowment, the cost of this program is only $250 for North Carolina participants and $500 for participants from other conferences and states. Continuing education credit will be granted after the completion of the program.  Deadline to apply September 15, 2017.
