Rev. Angela Pleasants, District Superintendent

Words from Angela

We are hearing numerous conversations around unity today especially within our denomination. What does Christian unity mean? Christian unity does not mean being united around issues no matter how important the issue, but united in the mission of Jesus Christ. “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13 NIV.
Christian unity does not come from uniformity around social issues or denominational unity. It is not what we do on the outside that makes for unity, but how the Spirit is working in our hearts. It is not our responsibility to create unity; it is the Spirit of God who brings unity. “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:3 NIV. It is the Christian’s responsibility to preserve the unity by walking in a manner worthy of God’s calling. It is not organizational unity that drives us, but unity in Christ... Read more

Making Room

In June I attended the School of Reconciliation at Duke Divinity School.  I can honestly say that it was a difficult experience.  We learned about lament – singing the Doxology in a minor key. We experienced white supremacy in government as we talked with a black pastor in Dallas TX who bumped up against policies designed intentionally to keep white leaders in power. I confronted my own white privilege as I interacted with other students.  This week was transformative, because my eyes were opened to more injustice in our American culture. I attended thinking that I would learn some things about how to work with the black churches in our district.  I came away realizing that I needed to have a stronger voice with our white churches who don’t realize they look through white privileged lenses.  Read more...

Hurricane Relief News

Our conference is providing many avenues of support for our fellow Carolinians affected by Hurricane Florence.  Visit this page for information on how to donate or volunteer.  If you would like to attend training to become a certified Early Response Team member, there are 2 opportunities in our area:

Royce and Jane Reynolds Ministry Fund Grants

What can your ministry do to make disciples for Jesus Christ? What can your church, your district, our conference do that will make disciples for Jesus Christ? The Royce and Jane Reynolds Ministry Fund of the United Methodist Foundation seeks to support innovative, engaging, ambitious initiatives that will invite new believers into a relationship with Christ. The ministry grants reach far and wide. They are diverse in method and approach. What grant recipients have in common is the vision of helping the Church to reach out in new ways and engage new people with the message of the Gospel. Grants have been made for Disciple Bible Study in prison, community Bible Studies, radio spots, movie nights for neighboring schools, expansion of church presence on the web and many more.

Preference will be given to ministries focusing on attracting younger generations. One-time applications or requests for startup grants for a special ministry not regularly a part of an annual operating budget are also given preference.

Grants will be awarded based on the merit of the request, and the amount of funds available.

Great Ministry in the Second Half of Life
Designed for ministry leaders over the age of 45 with a minimum of 10 years of service to the church.
Sometimes mid-career ministry leaders find themselves asking, “Is this all there is?” or “Can I keep up this pace for the next decade?” or “Is God wanting me to try something new?” In a beautiful retreat setting, we will examine research about mid-career, reflect on our own lives and passions, and talk with God and each other about how to find meaning, balance, joy, and success at mid-career and beyond.

News from the District Strategic Vitality Team

Submitted on behalf of the team by Kim Shockley, CVS
The Catawba Valley District has been blessed this year with significant funds available for granting through Missional Engagement funds and Vitality funds.  Missional Engagement funds are able to be used by local churches as they reach out in mercy or justice ministries into their local communities.  This summer we helped Mt Pleasant UMC (Stanley) participate with NC MedAssist to provide medicines for 450 people in their community. We have a local video if you want to learn more about this program for your neighbors. Read more...
