Words from Angela

When I served as pastor in a local church, I mourned with the members over loses and was burdened with them over hardships. But, I also rejoiced with them over their celebrations. Now as a District Superintendent I supervise 165 congregations, 148 clergies and 39,898 lay persons over five counties. Now, I rarely hear the celebrations. Most of my time is spent counseling and engaging in conflict resolution. Majority of the calls I receive are calls of complaints, fear, and anxiety.
Our denomination is struggling and praying through what will happen to our future as the United Methodist Church. As a result, many are filled with anxiety and fear of the future.  Read more...

Catawba Valley Happenings

What are these wonderful things taking place around our district? Welcome to the Catawba Valley Happenings. As I travel around the district, I will be taking photos to add to our Happenings board.

As I drive across the district I like to see action at our local churches. I was coming home from Hickory and noticed heavy bumper to bumper traffic. I thought, “What is holding us up?” As I got closer I saw the United Methodist cross and flame, Friendship UMC; Newton had their fall extravaganza. So, I pulled my car into the line of other cars turning into the church parking lot. Reverend David Hamlyn, our very own district Pope. What a fun night.

What else is happening across our district? Join in on our district wellness. Get out from behind the desk and move your body into action. October 22, we enjoyed a hike along Crowder’s Mountain. Look for our next outing coming soon.

Sharing Faith Stories Is Fun!

By Kim Shockley
Catawba Valley Church Vitality Strategist

I had so much fun yesterday afternoon! I met with 61 people from Missional Networks #9 (Belmont area) and #10 (Gastonia area) who came together at South Point UMC to learn how to share faith journey stories. Despite the fact that the Panthers were playing, we found great joy in turning our attention to why we need to share our stories, how to listen better to other people’s stories, and preparing and practicing our own story. It seemed to me that we generated good, positive energy by learning that we all have a story to share, and that’s it’s not that hard or scary to actually tell our story! We even got to hear that the Panther’s won before we finished!
Our District Superintendent and the Strategic Vitality Team and I all agree that one of the most important things for all of us to begin practicing is telling our faith journey stories. To this end, I developed this 2 ½ hour workshop to be offered throughout the district.  Read more
