A Word from Angela Pleasants

Welcome to August. August is the time of year where our minds are focused on back to school and the fall season. And if you are a good Methodist, you will be preparing for charge conference and stewardship. We also have planned several district initiatives. Be on the lookout for new and exciting ministries happening around the Catawba Valley District.
August 6-8 I will be in Myrtle Beach with the Convocation on the Rural Church. The Convocation will provide workshops focusing on reimagining your role in the community, cultural humility and extravagant mutuality, identifying and reducing pastor derailment and civil conversations. August 20-24 I will be continuing my certification courses in critical incident stress, debriefing, post-traumatic stress injury, suicidology, and spirituality and trauma.
I am looking forward to our upcoming clergy gathering. Our first gathering as we come back from the summer will be September 5, beginning at 9:30 a.m. We will start our time with devotion and Holy Communion. We welcome to our gathering Reverend Amy Burton and Reverend Dr. Mark King. Amy is the new Director of Client Relations with the United Methodist Foundation. Mark is our Conference Treasurer and Benefits Officer. He,  along with Dale Bryant, Benefits Administrator, will share new developments for clergy benefits in 2019. These include a new third plan option (HSA component) as well as enhancements to existing plans. Our meeting will be held at McKendree UMC located at 3537 Maiden Hwy, Lincolnton, NC 28092. Special thank you to Gregg Plott and the McKendree family who always provide us with excellent hospitality.
I would like to extend a special invitation across the district. I am a member of an app called You can explore your city, build a career, or get creative. You can join a group or develop your group. Some church planters even start their churches on this app. As a member of bible and bagels, the person sends a message on meetup to say, “We will meet at Mike’s bagels Thursday morning at 9:30” and people show up. I am starting a meetup movement across our district. It will be CVmeetup! It will always focus on wellness. So, our first meetup will be on September 12. On this date, I will be celebrating a landmark birthday. It will be my 50th! Celebrate with me at our first CVmeetup. Meet me at 8:30 a.m. at Crowders Mountain State Park for a hike, 522 Park Office Lane, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. I will treat you for lunch afterward, healthy of course!

As a personal privilege I have asked for and received permission to reprint this article from Susan Beaumont.  A big part of the relevant question is in how it forms us as a disciple of Jesus.  If you would like a partner/coach to provide perspective as you wrestle with your answers to this question, please know that I am available to walk with you for that work. Am I Relevant?
by Susan Beaumont on March 5, 2018
“My worry is that I am not relevant.” I asked fifty denominational leaders to share their deepest worries, and only one brave soul had raised his hand. “No matter what I do,” he said, “the church is likely to continue its decline. My deepest worry is that I have chosen to invest my life in something insignificant—that my vocation has become irrelevant.”
Today’s church leaders must address this frightening issue. We live in an increasingly secular world. Confidence in organized religion is at an all-time low. The voice of the Protestant mainline tradition has been marginalized. We long to matter more, but fear that our impact is diminishing. Does our vocational life still matter? Read more...
